Stress Management and Resilience Skills

Managing for Wellness takes a holistic approach to stress management using both mindful cognitive strategies and somatic techniques to relieve tension and anxiety as well as to build resilience. We work primarily with clients in the  helping professions such as other clinicians, therapists, psychologists as well as foreign assistance and humanitarian workers, first responders, primary care personnel, medical personnel, police, firefighters, and teachers. We pay close attention to signs of compassion-fatigue, vicarious traumatization and burn-out in our clients.

From the neuroscientific perspective, individuals working in human services should pay careful attention to at least there neuropsychological systems as all three are necessary to be fully in control of one's own well-being even in the most distressing of situations. These are: the brain functions that regulate interpersonal empathy; the balance in the autonomic nervous system  and arousal regulation; and the balanced functioning of all brain structures to allow for clear thinking. Our approach focuses on addressing all three functions by addressing the neurology of empathy and mirror neurons, the neurophysiology of arousal to build body awareness and calm chronic stress, and developing clear thinking skills through training in psychological flexibility.

We also address stress from an ACT perspective, viewing stress as something that has a lot to do with what our minds tell us about potential stressors. Training in psychological flexibility allows one develop a purposeful, workable life in which values, goals, and actions flow together. ACT helps one to look at potential stressors more realistically and to more accurately gauge the threat they pose as well as one's ability to cope with them. Practicing ACT principles and practices while using the power of the mind and body working together results in powerful and effective stress management techniques and strong resilience skills.

Managing for Wellness has counseled, coached and trained in stress management, resilience skills, and wellness for almost two decades.
